GB qualify three boats for the A finals on day four of the World Rowing Junior Championships
Nine GB crews were in action on day four of the World Rowing Junior Championships in mixed conditions in Racicie
GB鈥檚 men鈥檚 four, women鈥檚 quad and men鈥檚 quad all progressed through to Sunday鈥檚 A finals as conditions on the course made for fast but difficult racing on day four of the World Rowing Junior Championships.
A dominant row by GB鈥檚 junior men鈥檚 four of Michael Dalton (Molesey BC), Douwe de Graaf (St Paul鈥檚 School), Calvin Tarczy (St Paul鈥檚 School) and Theo Darlow (Molesey BC) saw them win their semi-final by a clear water margin over Italy and Greece, in second and third respectively. The powerful row from the GB crew saw them set a new World Best Time, smashing the two year record by 11 seconds, comfortably taking them through to the A final.
The junior women鈥檚 quadruple sculls also qualified for their A final with GB鈥檚 Lottie Orr (Henley RC), Phoebe Campbell (Thames Tradesmen RC), Georgie Robertson Ranger (Henley RC) and Olivia Morgan (Shiplake College) crossing the line in third, a length behind the Swiss crew in second, and a length and a half behind the winners Germany.
In a dramatic race for GB, the men鈥檚 quad of Victor Kleshnev (Maidenhead RC), Jake Offiler (Globe RC), James Cartwright (Gloucester RC) and Bryn Ellery (The Windsor Boys School) led from the start, but experienced late drama catching a crab at 300m as the water conditions worsened. Having lost all their boat speed the crew kept their composure to recover their momentum and cross the line in first, three quarters of a length over Poland in second and more than a length ahead of Romania in third. They will race in Sunday鈥檚 A final.
Four more boats qualified for their respective B finals and will race again on Sunday morning.
The junior women鈥檚 pair of Bella O鈥橦ara (Sir William Borlase鈥檚 BC) and Isabel Jonsson (Henley RC) rowed in a tough semi-final, finishing in sixth place to take a spot in Sunday鈥檚 B final.
Robert Powell (Aberdeen School鈥檚 Rowing Association) and Miles Beeson (Aberdeen School鈥檚 Rowing Association) in the junior men鈥檚 pair took fourth place, behind the top three finishers of Croatia, Romania and Germany. In another electric race, the Croatian brothers set a new World Best Time, beating the previous record by 5 seconds. GB will race in the B final tomorrow.
GB鈥檚 junior women鈥檚 four of Lucy Pullinger (Headington School BC), Daisy Butterworth (Henley RC), Mary Wright (Henley RC) and Mia Anderson (Latymer Upper School BC), came in fourth behind Italy, New Zealand and the Netherlands, taking them through to Sunday鈥檚 B final. Another World Best Time was set in the semi-final by the winners, Italy.
In GB鈥檚 last race of the day, the increasingly bouncy conditions proved difficult to navigate with the junior women鈥檚 double catching a crab and coming to a complete stop on the course. Olivia von Stauffenberg (Latymer Upper School BC) and Natasha Strudwick (Marlow RC) showed their maturity to get back into a strong rhythm to finish in sixth place and go through to tomorrow鈥檚 B final.
Also out on the course for GB today was the junior men鈥檚 double sculls of Joseph Anderson (Chester-Le-Street RC) and Laurence Joss (Tideway Scullers School). They put on a late sprint in their C/D semi-final in the morning to take the win ahead of Russia and Zimbabwe, qualifying them for the C final. They returned in the afternoon for the C final, taking second behind a dominant Russian crew and finishing 14 overall.
The final day of racing at the World Rowing Junior Championships gets underway on Sunday at 08:30 UK time with the B finals, followed by the A finals. You can watch the action live on the , and .
