England wins all four trophies at the Home International Rowing Regatta for third year

On a cloudy but calm day on Saturday, 27 July 2024, at Strathclyde Park, Scotland, the England Rowing Team again retained the trophies for Junior Women, Junior Men’s, Senior Women and Senior Men

In doing so England also became the first nation to manage the impressive feat of winning all four trophies in Scotland.

The England Team comprised 64 athletes from 32 clubs.

Racing kicked off with the Junior Women’s B Single sculls, won by English sculler, Giulia Riley (Latymer Upper School BC). This started an unbeaten run for the England Junior Women’s team, who came away with a maximum 40 points to take The Irish Travel Agency Cup for the 11th year in a row. The squad had several impressive victories including the Junior Women’s Coxed four, who dominated their race, winning by 14 seconds over Ireland. The crew contained rowers from five different clubs and were coached by Natalie Holden of Sir William Perkins’s School RC.

Hosts Scotland won nine events including standout victories in both the Women’s and Men’s Eights over the 2k course. Scotland did well in other sweep events too including the Men’s and Women’s Coxless fours and Women’s Pair, the Men’s Lightweight Single sculls and an impressive three wins in the Para events.

The Home International Rowing Regatta saw many returning rowers in each of the teams. These included Scotland’s Colin Wallace (PR3 M1x) racing at the Regatta for the first time since 2011, when he won the Men’s pair, also at Strathclyde Park. Colin finished first in the 500m race with a second place finish in the 2,000m, after recently getting back into rowing.

In total, England came away with 30 wins across the 48 races. Team and Men’s Captain Calum Jenkins (London RC) said, “I couldn’t be prouder of our remarkable achievement at this year’s Home International Regatta, retaining all fours cups for a record third year in a row. It’s been an honour to lead such a talented and driven group, and this success is a reflection of everyone’s relentless effort and passion for the sport.” Calum rowed in the Men’s Eight, which secured the Senior Men’s victory for The Annamarie Phelps CBE Cup in the last race of the day over the 500m sprint course.

England’s Junior Men also had a superb regatta, winning eight of the 10 events on offer, and only being bested by Ireland in the Junior Men’s Double  sculls over the 2,000m course and Wales in the Junior Men’s Quadruple sculls over the 500m course. Perhaps the junior men’s squad’s best performance was the Junior Men’s eight breaking six minutes over the 2,000m course and finishing in a time of 5:54.29 a full 15 seconds ahead of second placed Ireland.

Wales enjoyed four victories across the day. Their first win came in the PR3 Men’s Single sculls, which Migeul Ferriei de Lima of Llandaff RC dominated, crossing the line a full 24 seconds ahead. The Men’s Pair of Kai Schlottmann (Oxford Brookes University BC and 2024 Prince Albert Challenge Cup Winner) and Osian James (Leander Club) had a close finish in which these former GB World Under 19 rowers edged out Ireland by under two seconds.

England’s Women secured The Dame Katherine Grainger Quaich with seven out of a possible fourteen victories. Just four scullers were responsible for five of these! Laura Macro (Dart Totnes ARC) won the Women’s Lightweight Single sculls and Jennifer Titterington (Nottingham RC) Women’s Single Sculls, with Eleanor Dash and Chloe Sheppard (both Hartpury College and University BC) taking the Women’s Double sculls before all four came together to triumph in both the 2,000m and 500m Women’s Quadruple sculls races.

“I’m really proud of what the English rowers have achieved in Scotland at the Home International Rowing Regatta!” said James Andrews, England Pathway Manager for British Rowing. “The day saw some very impressive racing from all our crews and I’m very thankful grateful to the management team, coaches and clubs who helped ensure the athletes were able to give it their all on the water for England.”

James continued, “It’s humbling being able to speak to the rowers and coaches who come together to represent the team across the weekend about what it means to them and their families. Some of them have raced for the team before but many are representing England for the first time. I hope the rowers and coaches go away proud of their achievements, knowing that they will inspire others to row for the team and even beyond. There are 10 England Rowing alumni currently at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, so the current England team can certainly aspire to take their rowing further!
