England Rowing Team selected for the 2025 Home International Rowing Regatta
The Home International Rowing Regatta – between England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland – takes place on Saturday 26 July at Dorney Lake, hosted by Wales
The England Rowing Team are racing to retain all four trophies for the fourth year 鈥 Senior Men, Senior Women, Junior Men and Junior Women.
This year saw a record 116 boats from 58 clubs enter the selection trials at the London Regatta Centre at the London Docklands. Following the trial and U19 crew formation, a total of 64 athletes from 30 different clubs have been selected to represent England at the Home International Rowing Regatta across 35 events.
鈥淭his is my second Home Internationals for England, my first being in 2023 as my last junior race for my school, and now in 2025 as a senior athlete, I am so excited to race again,” said Senior Women鈥檚 Captain Anna Fay Cowel.
“HIR holds a special place for me, as it鈥檚 one of the few races where you can trial while representing your club, and so you often end up racing with your friends and teammates and extending your season in a really rewarding way.鈥
鈥淎t the same time, you don鈥檛 always know the others selected for the bigger boats, and one of my fondest memories is winning the junior quad after just one session together as we became firm friends after that. I think the team is the most special part of being part of the England squad: coming together with different people, sharing the pride of representing England, and building something in a short space of time. I鈥檓 also so excited to race old teammates who are now competing for other countries: this race always brings exciting racing that pushes us all to be better and closer to aspirations of success on larger international stages.鈥
Many of these athletes are coming straight from winning medals at Henley Royal Regatta and the British Rowing Club Championships, and are now taking the next step on the journey to representing Great Britain.
鈥淚t is a real privilege to be selected as Senior Men鈥檚 Captain for the third time and to represent England again at my fourth Home International Regatta,” said Calum Jenkins, recent Thames Challenge Cup winner at Henley Royal Regatta and England鈥檚 Senior Men鈥檚 Captain. “This year鈥檚 regatta at Dorney Lake is particularly exciting, as it鈥檚 the first time the Home International has been held there. It鈥檚 a venue we all know well and enjoy racing on, which adds an extra element of fun and familiarity.鈥
Calum continued, 鈥淲e will be aiming to win all four trophies for the fourth year in a row. The level of competition has stepped up across all nations, so it鈥檚 shaping up to be a great weekend. Everyone鈥檚 looking forward to going fast and putting down our best performance.鈥
Chris McManus, England HIRR Team Manager, said, 鈥淎fter our best-attended trial yet, we saw some close racing and some high GMTs being produced, so I am looking forward to seeing this year’s team race as we try to defend the trophies won last year.聽 All we need is the Dorney weather gods to give us flat water and fair racing, and I am sure we will all have a great regatta. I鈥檓 particularly looking forward to seeing how our PR3 Mixed 2x goes, as with good individual results behind them this year and being such a young crew here, there is huge potential for the future both for England now and beyond LA .鈥
A small change to the racing line-up for 2025 will see 3 new events, the Men鈥檚 and Women鈥檚 U23 Singles and the Mixed PR3 2x. All crews will race over the 2000m course, with Para boats, quads, and eights also competing over a 500m distance. In total, England鈥檚 junior team will race across 20 events, with the senior team (including para-rowing classification boats) racing across 26 events. Emil Ghattas (Lead Senior Coach) and Martin Gough (Lead Junior Coach) are preparing the crews at their training bases between now and the regatta this weekend, with the support of the selected coaches for each discipline.
James Andrews, England Pathway Manager, said: 鈥淪ince 2022, the England Team has achieved some incredible results, which I hope will continue in 2025. I鈥檓 sure the other home nations will be eager to challenge us for the top spots in the four trophies, and it will be exciting to see the racing unfold. The volunteers who run the team have been doing a fantastic job ensuring everyone will be ready at the start line this Saturday. A lot of work goes into the team to make sure everything goes smoothly, and I鈥檓 grateful to the dedicated team who pull everything together.鈥
